PRESERVATION OF PUBLICATIONS
Conservation, restoration,
microfilming and bookbinding are all done in modern equipped
laboratories and workshops. In the Matica Srpska Library the first
bookbindery was established in 1949, and restoration service in
1954. Today, the Matica Srpska Library is the Central library for
preservation and conservation of old and rare books in
Vojvodina.
Technical protection of cultural goods includes
the level estimation of damaged publications but also the choice of
protection methods, checking of already used methods and materials
as well as the probe the new ones. It also includes the documenting
of all these processes, preventive protection, conservation of the
old and rare books, manuscripts, pictures, graphics, maps, plans...
etc. by the process of biological and chemical stabilization of
sheets of paper, as well as the total restoration of sheets, the
restoration of bindings, and binding by reconstruction according to
the original document. 10,000 leaves of books and periodicals are
conservated and restorated every year.
In laboratory for microfilming, old and rare
books are microfilmed for microfilm archives, as well as microfilm
duplicates, reproductions, photographs, publication copies for
exchange, exhibitions or for the users are made. 100,000 microshots
are made yearly. All publications published by the first half of
19th century were microfilmed.
Bookbinding includes the
binding of new materials, the rebinding of old and damaged
publications, production of different protective boxes and book
jackets, papering of the materials for exhibitions, printing the
titles in gold, binding the multiple copies and other binding
activities.
