The Library is situated in the Matica Srpska building but some of its collections have been temporarily stored in an adapted old storehouse. Because of the long running problems with storage area, in 1991 there has been started a construction of a new building which with the old one makes unity.

Preparation, project documentation and the start of building were financed through the budget of Vojvodina, but since 1992 it has been financed from Republic's budget, through Ministry of Culture.

New building occupies an area of 4,300 m2 and most of its space is for publications storage.
